DescriptionThis multilevel class is safe for and accessible to beginners, and just right for intermediates. Three of Fonda's able and motivating instructors teach the 45-minute step class. Half the room does lower-intensity moves; the other uses higher steps and higher-intensity techniques. DescriptionFour of Jane Fonda's instructors take turns presenting an energetic 45-minute, moderate-intensity step workout. The frequent switching of instructors adds variety and interest, and the different teaching styles keep the workout feeling fresh. The choreography starts out very simple, and as the workout progresses, so do the moves, although the patterns never get terribly complicated. Each pattern is taught clearly, practicing the base moves before adding on arms, styling, or intensity. The cueing is excellent. Occasionally one of the participants demonstrates lower-intensity modifications in case you get tired or need to adapt a move for your fitness level; another shows how to raise the intensity for more experienced steppers. After the step workout, Fonda herself leads a relaxing 15-minute stretch--no extreme flexibility required. She repeats stretches, because you can take a stretch deeper if you do it more than once. A workout without weights, well, a lot of people are skeptical. Look around your local gym and all you see are stair steppers, stationary bikes, ellipticals, not to mention free weights and a whole bunch of other apparatus that are a mystery to me. Folks have really bought into the need for a lot of exercise stuff. Hey, those infomercials wouldn't be on TV unless a lot of you were buying!
The Queen speaks out...
But this article is about weights specifically. So, while I am the queen of working out without weights (that's a self-appointed title in case you were wondering!heh heh), I'll be honest, I do use free weights sometimes. Let me also share the fact that it's mostly just for vanity, NOT overall health, NOT for general muscle-building, nor fat-burning. Quite frankly, I like my arms to be a little more toned or defined than what I get from bodyweight exercise. I don't think you NEED to utilize weights if your main goal for working out is fat loss and muscle gain. Although there are a few great exercises with weights, the vast majority are just too inefficient, and too prone toward causing you overuse and underuse issues.
What's really so great about a workout without weights?
And why am I so gung-ho about a workout without weights? A couple really good reasons. One reason is because of balance and symmetry. Most free weight exercises are only working one muscle or group of muscles at a time, which is very inefficient. It also creates an imbalance between the primary and secondary muscles. One set of muscles get stronger while the other gets weaker through lack of use. This is the perfect equation for easy injury. With bodyweight exercises, your body is required to engage many muscle groups, which is more efficient, and also a more well-rounded approach that minimizes injury.
The best part about it...
The greatest part is that you can exercise anywhere, anytime, and for whatever fitness level you are. Did you realize that you have everything you need to get in great shape right now, spending about 20-30 minutes 3 or more times a week?
In short working out without weights is a lot safer. It also allows you to get a bigger bang for your exercise buck, so to speak. Hey, I'm just a really busy lady and I want the quickest, most efficient workout I can get that yields results. Don't you?
