Bouncy posture, 2 in 1 solution (or more)
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
My coworker had this chair, I tried it out and was like wow cool. I use it to sit on and exercise on. An occassional stretch is performed as well. I sometimes will use it as bench for weights :) becareful!

    Pros:

    1. it’s a chair

    2. it’s an exercise ball

    3. it rolls

    4. supports good posture

    5. A stretch and exercise guide was included!

    Cons:

    1. it’s a little high, with no height adjustment

    2. you need to keep the ball pumped otherwise it’s a saggy seat

    3. the wheel locks lock too easily

    4. this ones on you, good posture still needs to be a conscience effort, so sit up straight

    I recommend this chair/exercise tool.

It takes some time to get used to it. It’s still a little uncomfortable if you sit for long periods of time, but overall it’s very good. I’ve noticed my posture changed for the better.

It is great. I sit for work for over 10 hours a day. This helps my posture and has helped my back.

I have peristent lower back pain when I spend too much time sititng at my desk, which is a bad thing for a writer! I’ve been using it a few days, and I’ve noticed I don’t wake up in the morning with back pain any more. My one fear is that the cats may try to jump on it and puncture it at some point (we lost one exercise ball that way), so this might not be the best chair depending on your household inhabitants. You might want to note that its suitability will depend greatly on your height as well. I’m 5’9″.

    First day
    Rating:3 out of 5 stars
So today is the first day of using the Gaiam Balance Ball Chair at work. After sitting in it for 7 hours straight so far, I am definately feeling how it works my abs. I only have 2 complaints at this time:

    1. The casters stink. I work at a long work station and liked how my old chair, even though it was doing a number on my back, could scoot me around quick.

    2. The ball was pushing through the bottom of the base and dragging on the floor. I fixed this problem with some cloth tape doubled over to make a sling to keep it from going through again. I am not sure if a larger ball would do the same thing, but I don’t see myself getting the larger ball.

Everyone who has walked by my desk today has wanted to try the chair and they all say almost the same thing “wow, that’s comfy.” But it is the lower ball I said, so if you ave knee issues or otherwise have difficulty completing a proper squat, this might not be the chair for you.

I bought this for my wife and she loves it. Her old chair was causing her back problems, they are now gone. You just have to be careful around the ball with sharp objects. The ball will pop, but it can be repaired with an innertube repair kit.

    I Like the Ball Chair
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I do really like the ball chair and I have fun using it. I use it most of the time. But I must say, after about six hours of sitting on the ball chair, I like to go back to my traditional office chair. If I could only have one chair and I had to make a choice between the ball chair and my traditional office chair…. I would opt for the my traditional office chair.

    Great for sitting…horrible for pants!
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I love my ball chair and sit on it continuously at work. It was easy to get used to and I can move around quickly and easily. My sitting posture has improved.

I do have one complaint. My pants were showing a lot of wear and tear in their bottoms. After sitting on a pillowcase on the ball for a while proved that the material the ball was made of was the source of the problem, My seamstress mother made a fabric cover for it and…no more problems!

    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
it is a great item… definitely makes me move much more during the day as my work is sedentary… this is NOT a comfortable chair.. u won’t curl up and fall asleep on it… but it serves its purpose… and it is fun to sit on it (now that novelty’s wore off, I can objectively say that it is fun)… the ball included in the package is not as large as it is pictured on the box… so, you end up sitting lower and the back support is higher than you expect it to be by looking at the picture… otherwise I like it… and recommend to you if you spend a considerable chunk of your day sitting…

    Not Necessarily a Novelty
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I purchased this Gaiam Balance Ball Chair in late December 2005.

It’s an item you have to get used to if you’ve sat in regular office chairs for a long time (I’ve sat in padded-foam/plastic chairs for over 15 years, over 40 hours per week). I’m 6 feet tall, 155 lb., and practice Vinyasa Yoga every now-and-then, and I am no Yoga expert by any means.

    1. The purpose of doing Yoga ball exercise is to align your body through training the core muscle in your torso–your abdominal muscle will help support your back. This practice, over time, will give you better posture. Also, “constant-centering” myself on the ball reminds me not to bend forward my shoulders or slouch.

    2. My old office chair has a pneumatic height adjustment at 19″-20″ This ball seat height (with the doughnut-shape base) is about 23″ tall; sitting down on it, at my weight, brings it down to about 18″–of course, it will depend on your monitor/keyboard setup and on how much air you put in the ball. I raised the table height 3″ higher and purchased an adjustable keyboard/mouse extension tray. I make the ball as firm as possible.

    3. The back support is detachable (which I’ve done) and allows you to center yourself over it more. Don’t lean on the back support for too long, or you may hurt your lower back.

    4. You will experience some back pain for a few days, some shoulder pain if you’re use to having an armrest, and neck pain if you had a headrest. Keeping my chest open and head up help my abs stay taut.

Minus half-star for the rolling wheels because they sometimes trip me over when I get up and stand. So, I spread my feet and use my leg muscles to stand upright. I recommend it still because it motivates me to get up and walk around. It’s not healthy to allow the legs be pooled with blood (which causes veining) over two-three hours at a time. This item is at a decent price range, offered here on Amazon. Hope this helps!

I love this chair. I saw it at my chiropractor’s office and tried it there. They didn’t sell them but gave me the information. Amazon had them the cheapest that I found. This chair is great just for sitting on but doubles as an exercise tool as well. I’d highly reccommend it to anyone who has back problems or gets tired sitting on regular office chairs.

My co-workers and I are really enjoying this chair. Using it provides an easy work out. Two of us have had back problems and this really seems to help. — I would suggest using it only an hour, or two a day, and not as a chair replacement. It works quite well!

    stick with a ball
    Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I just purchased this chair to replace a balance ball that i have been using as a desk chair for about a year. Frankly, i prefer the real thing. The ball without the chair ‘frame’ gives me more mobility, is more comfortable and is cheaper. For my money, i’d skip the frills and just sit on your ball. One caution, you do need to be mindful when you get up and down as you seat can/will fly out from under you at times. Makes life interesting! ( -:

Great idea but uncomfortable and not very helpful
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
i read so many rave reviews using exercise ball as a chair to improve your posture. so i decided to give this a try. i was looking for a desk chair and even tho this was out of my price range, i decided to get it anyway thinking it will be worth the money to improve my health.

when i got it, it was a lot smaller than i thought, i found myself slouching more because of it. it’s very hard to sit more than 10 mins on it because of lack of comfort. it also stuck to my clothing and i couldn’t readjust it easily so i ended up putting a tower over it to counter this problem of rubber on clothes. i knew it would take some time for me to get comfortable on it so this review isn’t coming from just one time use or anything. i didnt have any trouble “falling off” or losing “balance” since i have excellent balance, i waited about 2 weeks for me to see any sign of improvement of comfort or posture but it never happened.

this chair is just NOT worth the trouble and money. it is uncomfortable, big and chunky, the ball is smaller than you’d imagine, and it doesnt help you fix posture. you are just better off with a regular chair then putting a small pillow on the back so you’re not slouching your back. i really think people who saw any improvement is solely psychological. they think it’s better for them so it helped them improve posture. in reality, there are better and cheaper way to improve posture.

    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I used one of these at my last job. This is a wonderful chair. The first time that I sat on it I fell off, but then once I learned how to sit on it, it was amazing. It kept my back straight, and kept me sitting upright, and I didn’t feel so sleepy after 8 hours at the computer. I love this chair. It it worth the price.

    Good chair!
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Besides causing quite a stir in my office, this chair has definitely helped my posture. It makes me sit up straight instead of slouching as I used to. It takes a little it of getting used to, and hurts your butt a little at first because you’re sitting on a part of your butt that you don’t normally use. But after a couple of days everything is great! The back rest is also nice for those times when I want to sit back and relax a little.

The base feels a little light, but not so much that it feels flimsy or unsafe. It’s just lighter than your average chair. My only complaint is that I keep kicking the lock mechanism on the casters.

    I would definitely recommend!

I love this ball!!!! I have a bulging disk between L4 and L5 and my back would always hurt at the end of the day. Now, I sit on my ball at least half if not all day and it works wonders! I can go home at the end of the day and my back doesn’t hurt. It has also helped my recover time when I do do something that hurts it. My disk does not get irritated so easily now because of the way I sit in this chair.

Only problem is that if I sit too long on it, my tail bone hurts.

Comfortable, but not too comfortable. Makes me aware of my posture, and occasionally to engage the muscles in my legs, behind, etc. Every now & then I’m even motivated to do the exercises that came with it.

    Great product.

    Decent Chair
    Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I bought this to replace the large ball I used to sit on at work. To be honest although this chair is pretty good, I really liked the ball alone. I found that the locking casters are placed so that everytime you put your foot down your heal will hit the locking mechanism and then you can not roll. You then must lean down to un-lock the casters and start all over again! It is comfortable to sit on!

Chair is great – only problem is if you are sensitive to the outgassing of plastic odors. The chair really needs to air out for several days if the plastic odors bother you. Otherwise, concept is really cool. It would be great if a different material could be utilized !!! :)

    Good & Bad
    Rating:3 out of 5 stars
This chair didn’t work for me. My desk at work is too low and has too narrow of a chair opening for it to help me out. I had to let enough air out of the ball in order to sit at the correct level, which made the ball too flat, which caused severe hip pain. I couldn’t figure out why my hips were aching, so I took the chair away and went back to my old one. Within a week the hip pain was nearly gone.

The chair did help my upper back/shoulders and made me very aware of my posture. Overall it helped me simply because it forced me to sit up straight and keep my shoulders from rolling forward. My middle/upper back feels stronger now due to my improved posture, and my improved posture continues to help strengthen the muscles this area.

Not what I had hoped for…
    Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I received the product in an appropriate amount of time, but am sorely disappointed with the chair. It sits too low to use comfortably at my computer and offers no muscle toning while I sit on it b/c you automatically recline on the lumbar support bar. Its not comfortable and hurts my hips when I get up. Plus the bar extends out well past the ball, and therefore my legs are always backed up against the cold metal. And yes, I got the larger of the 2 balls. Great concept though!!!

    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I love the ball chair. The only thing I don’t like or understand is the back support. I have no idea why it is even there. If you try to lean back on it you fall over. My advice would be to save money and buy just the ball with the ball holder. The back rest is a waist… of money, and is useless.

It has been great for my back. It is doing the job it is created to do. I also like that I can remove the ball from the holder and use it for my exercises, therefore not having to have a ball loose in the closet creates more space and less congestion in my home

I loved this chair!! Perfect for posture and for abs – subtle help, but over time it makes a real difference. HOWEVER, after about 8 months, the ball stopped holding air. No holes, couldn’t figure out why. Wrote to the company. Yes, they have a replacement. Sent me one – wrong size; sent a second one – wrong size; sent a third, WRONG SIZE!!! Sent a letter to the President of the company to seek help — NO ANSWER!!!! I won’t buy from a company whose President doesn’t offer some sort of comment to a dissatisfied customer. If you can find this chair made by another company – buy it! But, while Giaim has helpful customer service people, they can’t always solve the problems and the company President is unresponsive.

This chair has done wonders for my back. And created quite a stir at the office. I often come to my cube to find people sitting on it. I do have to constantly pump it up, but it’s really easy. The only thing I don’t like is that I somehow kick down the wheel locks all the time and because you don’t lean against the back you can’t use a heating pad. But, again, that’s not a big deal.

I really like using this chair. I spend a ton of time at the computer and this has helped my posture and the tension in my neck and back.

I do have to say that it took some time to get used to. I get motion sickness and for the first few weeks I felt like I was on a boat! Once my body figured out what was going on, it was smooth sailing from there.

The wheeled contraption holding the ball is a good idea in an office environment if you don’t want to humor your co-workers by rolling off.

    Rating:2 out of 5 stars
This was actually a workout to put together–the instuctions were pretty vague & I ended up using a different pump to pump the ball up. The hand pump was very slow & since I suffer from carpel tunnel syndrom the foot pump that I had worked much better.

While the chair feels comfortable, I have found that I need to build my time up on it slowly. After having back pain, I decided to limit the use to an hour a day & gradually build up the time. I now use it until my back, my feet or my thighs start hurting. I’m up to an hour and a half at a time after two weeks.

I may be more cautious than most; I started using a balance ball for a chair two years ago & then developed plantar facitis because of the stress that I ended up unwittingly putting on my feet.

I’ll keep trying to build the time up, but I think there should be some warnings about taking it slow.

ordered this chair because I was studying for the boards and sitting for lengthy amounts of time studying. At first it was a novelty, great for posture, fun to bounce on when boredom raised its head; but eventually my back wanted to be supported and alas, the meager plastic “T” provided is not helpful for this purpose. On the up side, my daughter removes the ball and uses it for pilates so it was not a total waste of money, but frankly, buying the ball alone is a better idea than this chair.

    Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I bought it because I have back problems, but it ended up filling up space and hardly ever being used. I should have known the difference between “I want it” and “I really need it”. The ball deflates, one of the brakes broke off (even though it has not been used much)… I also do not like the cheap plastic finish, it clashes with my much nicer furniture.

I have just sat on it to try it again, but the back support is not very comfortable and it moves if you lean on it, but I will admit that it does prevent me from slouching.

Update: I have thrown the base out and kept the ball, in case I decide to sit on it one day. A lady who lives down the street picked it up and uses it as a transport for her trash can. So I guess it’s useful afterall.

However, I read the instructions and it did state that the ball would stretch over the next couple of days and to keep inserting air to fill the chair completely. Now that it is a normal size, I never have a need to go back to a “normal” office chair! I love it!!

Amazing ergonomic chair with awful wheels…
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
The chair is perfect height for my desk and very comfortable. The only problem is the wheel brakes self activate all the time and make it hard to move around the office. It would be great if the chair came with a fabric cover so that the plastic did not make you so hot and sweaty in the nether-regions.

I purchased the balance chair for my daughter who is experiencing much less back discomfort. The wheel base is wide for stability. My guess is that the chair would not be as suitable for someone taller than 5′ 6″. Price was very competitive.

    Gimmick
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I am a grad student and spend a lot of time at my desk. I tried this product during finals and it was just as hard on my back as any office chair ever was. It also hurt my hips because there was less give than if it had been placed on the ground. I tried alternating between this chair and other ones to give my back a rest and to try to adjust to hardness of the ball. It continued to pain me, so I returned it. If you’re into the idea of sitting on a balance ball to improve your posture or strengthen your core, just get a big ball. This product’s height is problematic because it works against all the benefits of sitting on a ball: you don’t have to balance yourself and it lifts you too far off the ground (your thighs should be parallel to the ground when you sit but they can’t be with this thing). Also, it looks like a cheap commode, which is kind of embarrassing to have in your workspace.

    surprisingly comfortable
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
The chair is surprisingly comfortable. I’m not sure how *much* it helps me with balance or toning, but I do actually feel like I’m using my muscles a little more than usual while sitting all day at the office, so I feel pretty good about it. And it looks really nice, too.

Overall I like the chair a lot, just one real complaint. There is no height adjustment. For me it’s not much of an issue because my desk happens to be at around the right height. But this might be a problem for someone else. I suppose you could let some air out of the ball to make it a little lower, but that doesn’t strike me as an ideal solution.

I do have one suggestion for anyone buying this chair. There are four wheels that you snap into the proper places onto the bottom of the chair when you’re assembling it. Two of the four have locks you can flip down to prevent the wheels from rolling. I have found that with these two wheels attached on the front side of the chair, my feet keep accidentally hitting the locks and activating them so that it’s difficult to roll the chair. I’d suggest putting these locks on the back side of the chair unless you plan to leave the locks activated most of the time.

I’ve been using just a plain gym ball as a chair instead. You don’t really need or miss the back because the ball gets you to hold your spine in correct allignment. So I recommend just buying a ball (much cheaper) and using that alone.

(Though I would love a design that had little “heel ledges” on the front two legs. I always find myself trying to put my feet up on the slender metal bar, … if this ledge were just a little wider ….)

… but it is still a great chair for those who spend hours at the keyboard.

We bought two of these to sit in when doing puzzles to replace just a loose fitness ball and ordinary chair. We were amazed that they slid in nicely under the table even though we lowered the table a bit as we are both under 5’5″. You just don’t get tired sitting in a ball chair. You are constantly moving about.

They sell these on the web for as much as $199!!! Gaim sells ‘em for $99.

Buy them here and enjoy. You should be under 6 feet – the shorter the better I think. Just blow it up to suit your height.

I am 5 feet 3 inches and with the chair assembled it is soooooo low to the floor I have had to place a large bed pillow under the ball to make it the appropriate height (knee to hip alignment) I wish there was a way to adjust the heigth. It is fine now but inconvenient.

    Great for pregnancy!
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Like just about every other office worker, I have dealt with the weak muscles and fatigue that come from sitting at a desk typing away at a keyboard all day long. I began looking at other options pre-pregnancy, with the idea of using a large balance ball as way to support my back and strengthen my core muscles. During my search I found the BalanceBall Chair by Gaiam, and it is more than I could have hoped for.

The removable 52cm ball sits perfectly in a wheeled base, which includes a lumbar support bar and locking casters. Rather than having to worry about flipping over, I know that the support for the ball will keep it from sliding under me. In basic black, it blends with other office chairs in color, but not in looks. You will get more than a fair share of comments about your space-age chair. Be prepared to let everyone give it a whirl!

The ball occasionally needs to have a little extra inflation, and a hand pump is included. The chair can occasionally be fatiguing to sit in, especially if you are not used to supporting your core muscles for long stretches. This does, however, get easier over time. The one thing that I have appreciated more and more as I expand through my pregnancy is the little bit of extra give that the ball provides, allowing my hips to rest a little more comfortably. A co-worker borrowed the chair throughout her last trimester. The locking casters allowed her to put her feet up without worrying about sliding away from her keyboard. Also included is a 16-page booklet that guides you through some simple exercises that can be done on the ball at work or at home. Easy to follow and nice to have when you need to get yourself moving at the office.

I would highly recommend this item for anyone that is interested in using a balance ball for long-term sitting, and I would definitely recommend to any other pregnant moms that spend any amount of time sitting at a desk regularly.

    Great Chair!
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I purchased this chair because I have lower back pain. I’ve had it now for about 6 months and find that at the end of the day my back feels much better. I don’t use the ball for working out, I only use it as an office chair.

It definitely takes a little while to get used to it. The first few days, my back was sore and I almost went back to my old chair. It was sore, but it didn’t hurt. After about a week, I stopped noticing my back being sore. I’m pretty sure it is because my back had to build up the muscles to support my body. Which is exactly what I was hoping it would do. The chair doesn’t allow you to lean on the back of a normal office type chair, therefore forcing you to use your back muscles.

It doesn’t force you to have perfect posture, but without the ability to lean on a backrest, it reminds me throughout the day to sit up right. After a couple of months, I do it naturally now.

I realized how much the chair has helped with my back pain last week. One of my co-workers asked to try the chair out for a couple of days. My back hurt at the end of the day significantly more than it has in months. Pretty conclusive proof that this works for me.

Be warned, you’ll get a lot of funny looks when people first see it. Even the UPS guy laughed at me while delivering it. I don’t care! It makes me feel better.

The bottom line: Be prepared for a week or two of time to get used to it and build up the back muscles. I think afterward you’ll thank yourself.

***UPDATE*** Almost 2 years now since I bought this chair and I still sit on it every day. Have not had lower back pain at the end of the day since a few weeks after I bought it. Still 5 stars for me!

Since I got this ball chair, I have seen a difference. But I have only been using it for a few weeks so, we will see. The main thing I like about the chair is that it is easy to stand up after sitting for a while.

The chair takes a little getting used to, but once you try it you will like it. The chair does make you sit straighter creating less stress on your back and shoulders. Friends look at it oddly at first, but once they try it they like it too. Only drawbacks are that the ball deflates frequently and the wheel locks are very sensitive. Every time you roll around in the chair you accidentally knock the lever with your feet and lock the wheels.

    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
As many folks have mentioned, this chair isn’t for everyone, but it has really worked for me. I started having lower back pain –worst while sitting — and ordered this chair with my fingers crossed. Free Super Saver shipping, plus it got to me in Alaska in 3 days, so I was very pleased to start.

I had already been sitting on my exercise ball at home for an hour or two a day, but even so, I found that the first week I was switching to my regular chair after lunch. Then I could use this chair until late afternoon. Now after a month or so, I can do a 12-hour marathon work day and still not switch unless I’m feeling really lazy. You do have to work up to it. It never was painful, I just got a general sense of tiredness. My posture is much better when sitting in other chairs as well.

You do have to blow up the ball more after it sits overnight. The instructions do tell you this!!!! So ignore those reviews who say the ball is too small. It is a bit amazing how much more air you can put in on the second day. On Day 1, I did feel like I was sitting too low. After more air on Day 2, it was the right height.

The only reason I am not giving it a 5-star rating is that one of the screws that holds the back piece in place doesn’t actually work because the threading is off. Three different people at work (other than myself) gave it a try — guess they didn’t believe me when I said it didn’t work. Everyone came to the same conclusion that it is a manufacturing defect. You really shouldn’t lean back on that back piece, and I was not about to send it back, so I just have left that screw out and it works just fine.

After using this product daily for 6 months you couldn’t pay me to sit on one now. I soon found myself slouching worse than ever to compensate for the complete lack of back support. Just sit up straight in your normal chair and you’ll be fine. Oh, and it’s a cheap, plastic, poorly designed thing that should cost about $15. All four wheel locks were broken and don’t expect yours to last long.

This “chair” is great with both comfort and functionality. The structure of the chair allows your core to be strengthened (and tightened) while sitting upright (also improving posture). The removability of the ball includes a plethora of actual core-tightening exercises, among other things.

Not quite what I bargained for…
    Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I bought this chair a little over 2 weeks ago and have been using it on and off. I’m 5’8″, so the chair is quite low for me. I’ve tried inflating the ball to maximum, but that makes the ball to hard to sit on. (I like a little give!) The backrest is a little short as well, my primary back problem is mid-back just below the rib cage, so the short backrest hits me well below that point. After an hour or so, my back gets tired and starts aching. I have built up a little more tolerance to the chair and can sit on it for more than an hour, but I have to resort back to my traditional office chair after a while. I wouldn’t recommend this for anyone that has really bad back problems.

Improves Posture- Good alternative to the Swopper
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I had been eyeing the Swopper stool for a while to use at my computer. I wanted to be ‘forced’ to sit up straighter. So the Swopper starts @ $500. I saw this and thought it would be the same concept for a lot less money. I am loving this chair! I’m using it at the office daily- all day. And while it doesn’t ‘force’ me to sit up straight, it’s lack of armrests and its low back do cause me to readjust to an upright posture. Once you get used to it, it’s quite confortable. I’ve evened noticed my back muscles are getting a bit of a work-out from the adjustments you are constantly, but subconsciously, making. Occasionally, I’ll take the ball out of the base and just use it as a chair/ seat, giving myself an inadvertant workout of the core muscles. The only thing I dislike are the brakes on the back wheels; I am forever kicking them on and it messes w/ my rolling; but that’s the only complaint. FYI- air should be added to the ball about 1x per month, more in the first month. And the hand pump is inefficient, but I was fortunate enough to have an effective foot pump from a previous exercise ball.

    My chair threw me off!
    Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I bought this chair about 5 years ago and really loved it until it threw me off one day. The metal brace that holds the ball weakened where it connects to the chair and sheared off throwing me and the ball down onto the concrete floor. Fortunately I wasn’t seriously injured, but did have a huge bruise for weeks around my sacrum and tail bone. I have since had a steel brace made to replace the broken one, but don’t feel as confident as before.

If you decide to purchase this chair, remember to sit directly on the top of the ball. I think I was probably sitting a little forward which made me roll off more easily. Perhaps I had the ball inflated too much which may have weakened the brace . I also got tired of constantly unlocking the wheels and cut off the little switch thing on each one and since this happened, I have not felt comfortable using the back rest either.

I would recommend that the company make the ball well a little deeper and the metal brace stronger or placed differently.

I hope I’m the only one this has happened to as the fall was quite painful. I will purchase another chair but from a different company as it truly does help my back when I spend time at the computer, but am looking carefully at the designs.

Objects are smaller then they appear
    Rating:3 out of 5 stars
At over 6′ tall, I purchased this product knowing I was just above the recommended height. I purchased it because the image made the height of the chair look like it was roughly the same height as the chair I am using now, relative to my desk. I was grossly mistaken.

The model in the picture must be just shy of 5′ tall because the chair in person is very small and low to the ground. I had a couple of people try it out (5’10″ and 5’6″) and both of them remarked how low the chair sat, and neither would use the chair because of that reason.

Further more, the small size of the actual ball made for an uncomfortable experience. The ball was firmer than most exercise balls and the curvature made an unusual pressure point on the tailbone.

I am giving the product 3 stars. With a few caveats this ball chair can still be a good product for some. A) You almost need to be 5’3″ to 5’7″ inches to find this chair suitable. The range they provide is unrealistic for this size chair. B) You wear jeans to work. The rubber grips clothing firmly and it will cause accelerated wear to finer fabrics.

All that being said, this chair is still more professional looking for an office environment and it does have some health benefits. You will still get the looks and the questions, but at least it looks like it was built for the office and not the gym, but if you are looking to help your back and posture, I would recommend getting just a plain ball (seems to be a common opinion on this board) instead of this chair.

I bought this chair for work. I was using just a stability ball but with working on multiple surfaces and turning around a lot, it became a little inconvenient. The secretary at my chiropractor’s office has one of these and after talking to her about it, decided to get one. She is also a yoga instructor so she was able to put my apprehensions at ease regarding the chair/ball still doing some good for my core. I thought since the ball was part of the chair that it would not work my stabilizer muscles as much. I can still feel my obliques being worked on this chair and my posture is getting better as well. With no arm rests like a regular chair, you still need to maintain balance. The only thing that gets fatigued are my sit bones, but then again it’s a signal to me that I need to get up and walk around more. Co-workers have been very intrigued to say the least. I’m starting a revolution!

Being able to wiggle and shift (doing stretching feels so good) on the chair has only reinforced how rigid standard chairs are. I am ordering another for work!

Great Product! Helps prevent hunching while at the computer
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I was super excited when I first saw this product, and I must say I’ve had no issues since I’ve received it. I do a lot of moving around with my job (good wheels required) and I have not had an issue with the ability to roll, but at times the locking clip locks when I unintentionally hit it with my foot. That’s my only minor issue, but has been fixed with black tape. The ball is study, and the frame is great. I like that it came with a booklet to show you different simple exercises to do with the ball.

The reactions I get from co-workers is WTF are you sitting on? But after explaining the benefits of sitting on a ball, and having them try it out they all agree it was a smart purchase. I feel my back, and abs becoming stronger. I also don’t have as many neck issues. Gaiam did excellent work with this product.

I sit on a ball at home regularly, so when my work(where I sit alot) offered to buy me one, I was excited! I have a couple of herniated lumbar discs, which flair up occasionally and have not experienced any trouble since I have been sitting on my ball chair all day long at work as well as evenings! It has been great and I can sure feel the difference in my core muscles, just from sitting! The only negative for me is the way the back wheels lock up by themselves (I think the lock tabs just fall down from rolling around).

Wow, judging by all of the previous raving reviews, I guess I must be from another planet. I absolutely hated this chair. Very uncomfortable. Increased my neck pain and caused back pain. Also my butt was sore after sitting on this thing for more than 15 minutes AND my legs felt cramped. My son, who also spends many hours each day at his computer didn’t like this chair either. My wife said it made her legs uncomfortable. This baby is being shipped back for a refund!

40 hours per week on the ball
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
The Gaiam Balance ball was referred to me by a friend (thank U Suzy) so I went to their web site and checked it out but when I reviewed the pricing decided to shop around for the same product and found it on Amazon. I bought it there due to a special sale as well as free shipping that turned out to be 2 day Fed Ex and saved $70. I am extremely happy with my chair. The only change I would make to it (and may still do myself) is to have better rollers for it. I am on it 40 hours a week at my office cubicle for a month now and I need it as I have an injury to my sacrum causing pinched nerves and pain in my hips and legs if I sit for 40 hours on my expensive adjustable office chair. The ball is strengthening my core and I am not in as much pain now. Totally worth the money!

    Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I purchased because the keyboard tray height was too low to allow use of traditional ball for seating. The height is pretty good but I am only 5′ tall. Cannot imagine this working for taller person. The back of the ball/chair is awkward – it is not meant for back support and sticks out quite a bit from the chair not as shown – takes up more space than it could with no obvious use. The ball portion is OK in comfort – could have gotten same results by purchasing a smaller ball than what I had.

    Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I got this chair on the recommendation of a message therapist. I was having horrible problems with my upper back and neck, and she thought that it would help me sit straighter. It does that and my neck and upper back is a thousand time better then when I first got the chair. My problem now is that my butt muscles are sore all the time. This chair causes you to keep your butt muscles tight all day, and after awhile, you just get sore. This chair would be good for a person that only sits a few hours a day. I sit most of the day while working on a computer, and I think it is just too much.

It is difficult to control the height and if the ball loses too much air, it hurts your butt even more.

I teach at two schools. After buying one ball chair for one of my music rooms, I had to splurge and buy a second for the other room. I LOVE these chairs. I’m overweight and my lower back often gripes, but these chairs give me a comfortable sit. I’ve had them since I first saw them about 10?+ years ago. Still have the same chairs and balls, except I am replacing one of the balls that developed a leak after a couple of my students had a bouncing contest when I had my back turned. MORAL #1: You’ll love this chair. MORAL #2: Never turn your back on your students.

After quite a bit of use, the ball still seems hard. It’s not as comfortable as my plain stability ball. However, the wheels are a HUGE improvement over the plain stability ball. I recommend this product to those that have tried a stability ball but want more freedom to roll around the office.

Love the balance ball chair! Everyone who comes to our office wants to sit on one of them, and falls in love. We may be Gaiam’s top referral for our area. The pregnant receptionist loves them, I wouldn’t be without one (use it at home too); and as unusual as the chairs may appear they are well worth it. Not to mention how my back would never forgive me if I were ever to switch back to my super-expensive “ergonomic” chair.

    Good Idea Overall
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
If you enjoy using a balance ball for a seat but don’t like when the ball rolls away when you stand up, this is a good option. Possible the biggest drawback is the plastic wheels it comes with. They are very noisy (especially on wood floors) and the lock on two of the wheels flips to the locked position too easily. The post used for the wheels looks like a standard post size for office chairs, so I plan to find quieter set of wheels to replace them.

It has a nice, firm feel when you sit on it. Using an electric pump is recommended – I pumped the ball up with the supplied hand pump and thought my arm was going to fall off. Also, despite using a 52cm ball, don’t bother inflating it to the full 52cm … it won’t fit in the chair portion if you do.

    Great chair….if it lasted!!
    Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I ordered this chair on November 3, 2008 so I’ve only had it for a little over 2 months now. It did take a little bit of adjustment to begin with…and I did remove the back since I found myself wanting to slouch with the back as something to lean against. Since then it has worked fine….until the air stopped staying in it. For the past week I’ve had to repump up the ball every morning…and then again half way thru my day. I’ve checked it for leaks but we can’t seem to find/hear/see one. I’m gathering that after a couple of months the plug must get loose perhaps and let air seep out slowly. If I only had to repump it up once a week or so, as I did in the beginning, I would have given it 5 stars. However, for what this thing cost I expect better performance. I’m leaning towards what one other reviewer said…..get the regular ball and use it without the chair part. I do that at my kitchen table and it seems to work fine so at this point I’m out $100 for this chair and I’m headed to Target to buy a bigger ball to use at my desk by itself. Sitting on a ball is the way to go….just need to get the basic ball so if it starts going flat after a couple of months you’re only out $20 versus $100 (or $80 now that it’s been marked down).

You get something whimsical and unique. (As long as you don’t mind your teen-age kids making fun of you.)

    Definitely worth it!

I am VERY impressed with my Gaiam ball chair. My daughter had suggested a “ball chair” (which I had never heard of) for my bad neck and back, knowing I’d set myself up for a lower back spasm by sitting in a regular chair, slumping toward the back of the chair for hours. My back let me know for an entire week that my wooden chair position was exactly what it did NOT need. Now that I have my Gaiam, I sit up straight (because it forces me to do so) and I can spend hours and hours typing up a storm without a back ache EVER! It’s a fabulous chair. When I first received it, one or two trial and error stints with filling or deflating the ball a bit were sufficient to find my exact, perfect height. The Gaiam ball chair really a marvel…especially for those of us with back problems…or anyone who wants to sit properly!

This chair has forced me to sit upright again. It’s quite comfortable, I adapted quickly to its style. I didn’t have any back issues when I bought this, but I knew that being in front of a computer all day in a conventional chair allowed me to get lazy and slouch. This chair establishes a good structure so my shoulders don’t droop and I sit with my back against the backrest. It was easy to assemble and the casters work well on carpet.

I was recommended by a physical therapist to use this chair to obtain relief from neck issues. It is very comfortable providing adequate back support but with greatly diminished stress to the lower back resulting in relief to my neck area. I have had cronic sciatica since high school (i.e. many years) and purchased this chair to help with my posture during my long days of sitting in front of a computer at work. At first, the chair was hard to get used to and I ended up leaving work with a stiff lower back for about a week. However, I stuck to it since nothing else worked. I gave it a chance and now I’m thrilled! Since I’ve started using it, I have not had a pinched nerve. Apparently a good posture thoughout the day is a very important preventative measure so this chair is nothing short of amazing for helping me maintain the posture that keeps the sciatica away. Granted, I also do a fair amount of yoga now so I’m not sure I can give the chair all the credit but I know it helps. In fact, since I don’t go home with a stiff back anymore, it means my core is stronger and can handle the proper alignment of my sitting posture better. HURRAY!

As a fan of the stability ball for exercising, I was hopeful that this chair would relieve or help prevent my back pain at work. It did help me maintain a better posture, however the cheap plastic of the chair is so squeaky that it is very annoying to those around me in the office. Also, the ball ruins the fabric on my skirts and dress pants. I think it must be pinching the fabric whenever I move or get up as the rubber stretches.

I am a guy. I’m about 6’1, 205-215 lbs. That makes me a rarity for someone whom bought this chair. I’ve got some back problems and possibly a pinched nerve and have had a difficult time finding some relief. Here’s my take on it. It is plenty of high for me and I am over 6 feet tall. For those who are complaining about it, your either not pumping it up enough or your desk height isn’t standard. Second, when your read other peoples’ reviews and they mention that there is a “getting used to it” period, they are right on the money. I’m in good shape and I was floored by how sore my back was after the first day I sat on it at work (and only for 4 hours). It does take some time to get used to it and I think that that, in of itself, is proof that it does help tone your back. I now sit on it all day at work (at least 8hrs) and would like one for home. Overall, I was very pleased with it. Here’s the bad for me. First, the embarrassment factor – I felt like an idiot on it at first and got sick of answering questions. Second, I’m not so sure that just buying a big ball would do the same thing (or better) and cheaper.

I bought this chair because my doc recommended for good posture. However, I found that it doesn’t do miracles. Since you couldn’t lean on the back, it does not force perfect posture. What you have to do is to adjust the computer screen, the keyboard, the mouse to make them at the correct height and positions.

The quality is good for the price though.

The Gaiam chair has been a great experience and I use it everyday for several hours at my university office. The remarkable outcome of the product is the energized feeling I experience after 2 or 3 hours of desk work. Instead of aches and pains typical of other office chairs, my back feels great, my core muscles are tightened, and my legs feel ready to take on the stairs (from my 4th floor location). One suggestion, armrests. There are many times I would benefit from armests which would prevent my propensity to lean forward on my desk toward my pc screen in my at-rest position.

If you are just wanting something to help you maintain good posture while sitting then you might like this. I was very sore after sitting on this for only about 3 hours, with taking occasional breaks. It’s probably better to just have a sturdy office chair with good lumbar support for the office. A balancing ball might be good for working out with but it doesn’t make a good chair.

Don’t be discouraged when you first inflate the ball. The ball is going to look too small for the average desk. Let it sit a few days and then you can inflate it more. At home, in my big living room, it still looked too small. I thought I wouldn’t be able to reach my keyboard. Once I got it to my office, I found that it’s the same height as my executive chair.

It truly made me realize how immobile and rigid my regular chair has been all these years. Now I’m constantly moving my spine and flexing. What a wonderful change from sitting in the same position ALL day and getting stiff as a board. My back pain hasn’t disappeared (probably never will) but this is much better.

This works great in alleviating your lower back pain. I sit on it all day and have not experienced any more issues with lower back pain. This isn’t the most comfortable thing to sit on all day, however, and one’s behind can get pretty sore. But that soreness goes away if you take frequent breaks.

I just love this chair! I use it for my desk chair at work, 50+ hours a week, constantly at the computer. I’ve been using it for nearly a year and my lower back problems are no longer bothered at all by the long hours of sitting.

The cushion on your “seat” is adjustable by how much you inflate the ball. If you inflate fully and it’s too firm, let a little air out for a softer, more cushy seat.

The back rest is not meant to lean against….just to occasionally lightly touch your back and encourage proper posture. With this chair, I’m much more likely to sit up straight with good posture — for which my lower back is very grateful! The ergonomic chairs I’ve used before have left me feeling so stiff and in so much pain at the end of the work day, I couldn’t do anything after work. Now at the end of the day, my back doesn’t hurt, and I feel like I’ve been working my core…not to the point of soreness…just strengthening it.

Other people at my office have purchased these chairs and love them as well.

    Balance ball chair is great!

The chair met my expectations. I was already accustomed to using a ball for exercise at home and in classes at the gym. The price was reasonable. I did use a more powerful pump to inflate the ball than the one that came with it. I am sitting on the ball all day at work. It has helped improve posture and relieve back, shoulder, and neck pain.

You need to be at least 5’8″ for this chair to work the proper way, For your legs to be at a 90 degree angle they recommend. No other ball size is available and I contacted Gaiam about the problem but they just said it’s not for everyone! Also the ball is very HOT to sit on for any length of time. Good luck with it if you try.

The chair was very easy to put together and only took a few minutes to blow up the ball. The back is not really used for anything except for balance during exercises, if you use this chair for exercises. That, and to make the chair look more like a real chair in my cube.

Like another reviewer, I set up a balance ball to use as a chair at my desk. Before doing this, I used to have terrible shoulder and neck aches from working at my desk. With my new set-up and improved sitting posture, I feel much better and can work longer. The ball was too low at first, so I put several throw rugs doubled-up underneath. This gives the ball sort of a cradle and it stays put. (But you have to be careful–it can get away from you.) For the price of $29, I have exercise equipment and a good chair for my desk. Exercising while working is possible, too. It’s great.

meets my expectations, but I wish I’d looked at others
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I have been considering this purchase for a while, and decided to spring for it when the price dropped. I am a musician and am very conscious of body alignment — I do yoga, Pilates and Alexander Technique to maintain my body for playing. My old desk chair was not allowing me to sit truly well, and this product does. Sitting on a ball is great by itself, but the wheeled base allows it to truly function as a desk chair — for instance, to roll over a few inches towards the printer, or rotate around to the other part of my L-shaped desk. I don’t miss the arms at all. I am usually typing or writing when sitting at my desk.

The chair is very comfortable and was very easy to assemble. You should know that the manufacturer cautions against leaning on the back rest, called the “support bar;” it is for “stability during the exercises.” There is a booklet included that shows a series of exercises using the ball both on and off its roller base. There are locks on two of the casters for use in doing these exercises.

My caveat, which does not reflect on the quality of the product, is that the ball is too small for me to use off its base. I am 5’8″, and use a 55 cm ball. I did not see the FitBall product, which uses the exact ball I like for exercise, and I probably would have purchased that if I had, so I could store my ball on the chair. I may yet; this chair is an acceptable height for my computer keyboard, but rather low for the other part of my desk.

I was thinking about buying this item, but I realized that it’s missing armrests – which I think should tire your arms out after a while.

While this chair is not as comfortable as a typical computer chair, that is actually a good thing. This chair requires that I engage my shoulder blade and stomach muscles while seated. Initially, there was a little discomfort, however as several weeks went by and those muscles got stronger, that discomfort has disappeared. The end result has been a noticable improvement in my posture.

My chair was received without all of the parts. I was told that I could send back the chair and get a refund. Keep the chair (that I can’t put together) at a 10% discount. Or send the chair back and get a new one in 3-5 weeks. It only took me 2 weeks to get it the first time. Instead of offering service (free expedited shipping, faster delivery, etc), I got customer service agents regurgitating computer automated responses. The chair may be nice when it’s put together, but I wouldn’t know.

It’s fun to take a break while working to do some stretching exercises and crunches etc. on the ball separately. I noticed that my butt gets sore after just regularly (relaxingly) sitting on it for a while. It’s the kind of sore of just sitting on a chair too long, not from working out. But otherwise, I like being able to feel like my posture is better and that I can easily work out just by sitting at the computer.

I have back problems and this chair has helped me sit correctly and now my back doesn’t hurt as much. It forces you to sit up in the correct postion and I really like that part. I am a sloucher so it really helps me not to do that anymore. I highly recommend this to anyone who’s job entails a lot of sitting.

The only thing that I don’t like about it is the wheel locks. They seem to always be on and then I have to reach down and unlock them. The ball was hard to blow up, so you will need access to an air compressor. The pump that comes with it would take hours to pump it up.

I purchased my Balance Ball Chair for myself for Christmas. I love it. It really makes me aware of how I am sitting. Unlike others purchasing this chair, I do not have back problems. I bought this chair in hopes of preventing any problems. After a long day at my desk I no longer have a tired feeling. It can be a bit cool to sit on on a cold winter day but that may just be me. It is nothing a towel can’t prevent. I have also had a few heavy guys sit on it with confidence that it will not burst. Overall I would buy it again.

I purchased this chair hoping to strengthen my abs and back to alleviate recurring low back pain. Unfortunately, it has actually made the problem worse. It seemed like a logical thing to do at the time: purchase a chair that’s going to give “correct posture” , etc., but it turns out the what’s correct posture for one person can be incorrect for someone else. Unfortunately, the Gaiam Balance Ball Chair does not allow for the level of adjustablility needed for me to sit comfortably in an office situation.

It definitely makes a difference in my work day. It helps your posture and gives you support to sit up straight. My back doesn’t hurt anymore. It didn’t take much to set up the chair and trust me, I am technically challenged. My assistant and I had it up and running within 10 minutes. It does take 3-4 days for it to expand to its full size, so don’t be alarmed as I was. Just keep the pump handy in your desk drawer. The chair comes w/the pump. By far, Amazon had the lowest price when I was pricing it out online w/shipping and all.

    Dramatic improvement with initial use
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
My experience after using the balance ball chair the first time took me by surprise. I was hoping for improvement over time not a reduction in neck, shoulder, and lower back pain within the hour. I had concerns it would not roll on the carpet at my desk, that it would not be the correct height, and that the ball would not remain inflated. None of these problems have occured. I have searched online for an extra ball the same size to have on hand in case I need to rotate once in awhile to maintain shape and inflation, but I have not found one the same size. Given that the ball is still inflated at the same level after using the chair for over two weeks it seems an extra ball is unnecessary. The chair is so light weight it moves with me as I scoot toward the printer or a file drawer. I completely lost awareness of the chair the first day I used it. I had been struggling with my previous chair so much I now realize it was in my thoughts throughout the day as I frequently worked to readjust its position and mine in an effort to reduce my discomfort. I recommend this product along with proper ergonomic placement of the computer screen, keyboard, and mouse to improve dramatically if not eliminate body discomfort and pain while working at the computer.

Very good chair if you’re the type that tends to slouch. You are forced to sit properly. I like it if I don’t need to sit at my computer for hours. In any case, love the chair. It looks cool, it’s light, and it’s functional.

I have mixed feelings on the balance chair. My team of 3 people all ordered the chairs. We do sit up straighter, but have experienced back pains as well. I’m not sure why they charge $80 for the chair… it’s just a ball on a cheap plastic frame, but I guess that’s what new ideas sell for. If I had to do it again, I would make sure to have a chair to alternate with, since it’s only tollerable for a portion of the day. We have gotten more used to them as we use them longer, but it’s still a bit uncomfortable to sit on a rubber ball all day.

By the end of the day, we are sitting in even more contorted positions than we would on a normal chair, so it’s important to be very dedicated to good posture. We’ve only had them for a few weeks, so I haven’t noticed any difference to my core strength yet.

I was acquainted with this chair from having seen it at a friend’s home. They put it aside after using it for a year, so I called to ask why. They just got a fancier chair, but she wasn’t yet ready to unload it, so I bought this for Christmas for my two tween children, who spend alot of time at the computer for school and for online activities. I have extensive experience using the ball for exercise, so I knew what the ball can do for you. Voila! They think it’s cool and they get core strengthening action at the same time. The bonus is a nice full color booklet with suggested exercises for breaks from your desk work. I’ve made posters out of these phoots and posted them at eye’s level to remind them it’s a good idea to take a break. Not sure why the chair needs to be so expensive, but I’m pretty sure if I’d set a ball there for them, they’d not think it as cool, so the outcome is worth the cost for us.

Overall, I’m satisfied with this purchase, not euphoric about it.

The ball-chair is best when fully pumped with air. You can feel your core muscles flex as you sit. When it loses air, I tend to slouch.

Chair isn’t so good on carpet and you have to inflate it at least once a week. Chair’s shouldn’t need this much maintenance, so if you’re up for pumping it up, this *might* be for you.

After several weeks using the chair, I notice an improvement in my posture (wherever I sit or stand).

If this is for your office, you might want to start out using the chair only a few hours a day to build up muscle tone without over doing it (especially if you have a weak lower back like I did). After a few weeks, I went to sitting in the chair all day.

I also love the suggested stretches (in directions).

Finally, read the simple directions. You should not be leaning your back against the back of this chair. Make sure height(inflation) is adjusted correctly.

Three persons in our department are using the Gaiam Balance Chair. It works well, except the ball has to be reinflated more often than they thought. In order to stay seated on the chair, it requires good posture, so that is great.

Not as great as I expected
    Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I have hip and knee problems and was experiencing some discomfort in my regular office chair so I decided to give the balance ball chair a try. Personally, it caused an increase in my pain specifically in my hips and lower back. I think the problem may be the back support bar, which as another reviewer mentioned, is removable. I have been using just a plain large balance ball as my chair the past few weeks and like it much better, so you might want to give that a try before you purchase the whole chair get-up.

    Could Be Better
    Rating:3 out of 5 stars
This ball will help your back if you have to sit a lot of the day at a desk. However, I found the lumbar support not quite ergonomic enough for me as I still need to use one a Miracle Ball or pillow when I want to lean back. This surprises me as it’s supposed to have been designed by a chiropractor. I also think the GAIAM company’s products are overpriced for what they give you. Walmart carries balance balls for appox 1/2 the price. And the one I bought came with a foot pump inflator, which is so much better than the hand pump. Overall, the chair is sturdy, the wheels roll well and the book of exercises are helpful. However, I feel this chair is only worth $50, not 80.00.

    Fabulous Fun chair
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This chair is a backsaver! I bought it because I had been sitting on a hard wooden stool. I would find myself stooped over when I was really concentrating on work. My back would get stiff and sore and my posture was horrible. I bought this chair and it is so comfortable it takes the pressure off my lower back and I don’t hunch over anymore. I find myself more energized because my body doesn’t need to recover after sitting for long periods of time. Also if I find myself needing a little extra energy, I bounce, and its fun. It took a bit of time (like maybe 5 minutes) to get used to. I really have to be conscience of how I sit down, I can’t mindlessly plop down, I might miss and hit the floor. One beware: if you have kids, I have 4, you may need to make a “hands off Mom or Dad’s chair” rule because it is very popular with them too, a ball chair on wheels how can anyone resist! Even my friends say what is that, can I try it? Everyone loves it.

be “on the ball” at work!
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This chair is great! I have lower back problems and this has relieved about 50% of my daily pain. Also, as an added benefit, I can utilize the ball to complete a series of stretching exercises that help me when I am hurting. My co-workers are all amused by the sight of my chair. I highly recommend it for anyone who has problems sitting for long periods of time. I have not enountered the stability problems that were reported and I did not even install the “back bar”. It is unnecessary and gets in the way. I had no problems with the ball fitting on the chair base, though I did have to add air the 2nd day because the ball ‘relaxed’. But I don’t consider this a problem.

    Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I bought the chair in mid-December it is now mid-January. It is very comfortable and good for my posture. The only issue I have — IT STINKS!

I keep the ball on my porch when not in use. After contacting Gaiam I was told to wait another month and if it still smelled they would replace it. Currently I can’t use it for more than a half hour without feeling queasy. I am going to stick it out a couple more weeks and see if the smell subsides.

Get Altus weighted Body Ball, you will get the same results
    Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I almost bought this chair, but I found Altus weighted Body Ball and it totally changed my mind.

The weighted version is different than the regular body ball. The ball has 2Lb of sand fill. It is ideal for using it as a chair because you do not have to chase the ball all over the place at your office. And you can easily do some ball exercises whenever you get a break from work. Also the added weight makes you work harder to move the ball with your core muscles and your legs. It is perfect for my need!

I have not seen any weighted version on Amazon because this is some new trend.

To look for weighted version, take a look at the Altus Body Ball package, the left bottom section should say “WEIGHTED BALL PROVIDES ADDED WORKOUT OPTIONS AND BALL WILL NOT ROLL AWAY”. (the regular version says “USE FOR CORE, STRENGTH, FLEXIBILITY, YOGA OR PILATES” instead)

I love my Gaiam Ball Chair! My back hurts terribly when I sit upright. But sitting at my reception desk all day on the Ball Chair makes a big difference. At the end of the day I don’t dread sitting in my car to drive home and I’m not exhausted by the time I get home. I won’t go back to a regular desk chair after my Gaiam Ball Chair.

Great item. This chair certainly gives you a passive workout, evidenced by what will be sore muscles the first couple of days- but that goes away once your body adjusts. It also encourages you to have a good posture, and consequently, i’m less fatigued by the end of the day. I recommend this chair.

Haven’t used it once since we bought it.
    Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I bought this chair as a gift for my husband. He put the chair together but he hasn’t used it since he constructed it 4 months ago. I am thinking about taking it apart and selling it again. The reviews for the chair seemed like a great ergonomic solution to back problems and too much sitting in the office. However, at 6’2″ the chair just doesn’t work for him. The ball also seems extremely small, even for me at 5’4″. Reviews that I read said that with wear the ball would stretch out and would allow more air to inflate the ball and increase it’s size… but we haven’t even gotten that far since no one wants to sit on it. Looks cool in the picture, but looks cheap in real life.

I first saw this chair at my chiropractor’s office. It really is comfortable, moves easily, and supports where I need support. I haven’t taken it to the office yet — my intended purpose — because we use it at home.

The only down-side is that I am 5’7″ and it is really high enough, but I prefer a higher seat. But this works.

Balance Ball chair a dream come true
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I ordered this chair for my director, and had no qualms about it since I am familiar with the Gaiam name and its quality products. When I assembled it (i.e. pumped up the ball), I did get strange looks and questions about it functionality, but it worked fine. Just make sure you follow the directions and pump up the ball again 48 hours after the initial inflation, and it will become bigger but just as sturdy. After sitting in it for several weeks now, my director has noticed her posture becoming better and her back pain quickly disappating. Highly recommended for anyone with back problems – ignore the funny looks and odd comments from people – just sit back and relax… no, scratch that. Don’t sit back – sit right and sit better!

when spending long stretches at the computer. I feel the

chair is much overpriced when compared to other office chairs

of much better quality. The wheels and locks are not the best.

The wheel base is a bit too broad making it difficult to move around easily in a confined area. Overall, I am glad to have it.

    great, but wheels …
    Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I love the ball chair but a couple things to mention. 1. the wheel brake always shuts if you brush your foot near it, which happens often when sitting on it, so that you go from freely rolling to stopping, without meaning to. and, the plastic brake on one side broke about two weeks after i bought the chair so now one wheel is permanently not rolling.

you also have to inflate it about every two weeks to keep it fresh, but its worth it.

LOW BALL – Gaiam Balance Ball Chair
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I loved this chair. It is very comfortable and really promotes good spinal alignment and core balance. However, I wanted the chair to use at my desk and it was just way too low to work for me. I even have my computer on the lower return portion of the desk, and it was just ergonomically too low. And I had to stand up to reach things at the back or corner of my desk. I was sad to see it go, but I had to sell it as quickly as I purchased it. I’ve gone back to my large balance ball.

    Defeats the purpose
    Rating:2 out of 5 stars
After sitting on a true yoga ball for 3 years as my office chair the Balance Ball Chair sounded like a fancy upgrade for my new job, but I was disappointed. The quality of the product was fine, assembly was easy and it looked fine. But the base that the ball sits defeats the idea that you must use your abdominals to balance because it is completely stable. The rollers don’t work very well on carpet and the wheels get locked very easy which makes motion even more awkward. I have returned the ball chair and am back to my yoga ball.

Also, if you are tall, I would not recommend the balance ball chair. It says that is good for people up to 6′-0″ but I am 5′-10″ and it is very short. The exercise book that comes along with the chair has exercises that are only possible if you are 5′-2″ or shorter.

    Ball chair great for sciatica/piriformis
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This chair is the only chair I can sit on and not aggravate my sciatic nerve or piriformis muscle, both of which I strained doing running and biking races. It was impossible for me to sit in my chair at work or in a car or movie theater without getting sharp, shooting pains down the back of my leg. The only chair I am comfortable in is my ball chair. It took a couple of weeks for my lower back muscles to adapt, but now I feel stronger in the lower back than before. The chair is also very easy to assemble. I bought two – one for my office and one for my den, where our computer is located. People at work laughed at first, but then they sit on it and ask, “Where’d you get that?” I highly recommend this chair for comfort, especially if you have problems like I’m having, and for core strength.

    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
All in all, I am satisfied with the chair. I haven’t found it hard to balance on, and it does force me to sit upright. Sometimes I find myself ‘cheating’ and leaning back on the backrest, but if I want I can always remove it. Also I’ve found that the metal bar in front is unnecessary; the ball stays put just fine without it. And one more thing: the chair is made of hollow plastic which increases the jenk factor a little bit. But hey, you get what you pay for.

I had back surgery several years ago and since then, I’ve not been able to sit at my computer for more than a few hours without feeling nerve pain. But this product allows me to work for hours without stress. I think the fact that I’m exercising a bit by balancing on the chair as I work is the key. It’s definitely improved my posture as I’m at my office at least 9-10 hours a day. You do have to re-pump once in a while. The wheels are cheaply made as one’s already broken from rolling around a lot. Our office purchased 9 and only 1 of the pumps was in working order when we received them. The white tips either did not screw on as the screws were either warped or miasligned.
